2006 toyota highlander hybrid review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New hybrid joins best-selling lineup. introductiona new gas-electric hybrid model has joined the toyota highlander line for 2006. The highlander hybrid uses toyota's hybrid synergy drive. the toyota highlander is the best-selling vehicle of its type, a midsize sport-utility based on a car. Highlander's popularity is partly because it's a toyota, which promises top-notch quality, durability and reliability. But it's also a result of its practicality and easy manner. the highlander is, after all, the easiest of motoring companions. Getting in and out couldn't be easier. Accommodating various combinations of people and cargo is easy. Seating for five comes standard, but the highlander can carry up to seven passengers with the optional third-row seat. Folding the seats down reveals 80 cubic feet of cargo space. underway, it's smooth and quiet. Its independent suspension is set up for comfort and ride quality as a priority. The hybrid combines a 3. 3-liter v6 with an electric motor, or two motors in the case of all-wheel-drive models. The electric motor improves acceleration, helping the hybrid to easily keep up with big, powerful suvs. This urge to speed comes at a major cost to fuel economy. The real story here is emissions. The highlander hybrid will be classified by the government as a super ultra low emissions vehicle, or sulev. The 2005 models added more standard equipment. The hybrid is new for 2006; the other models carry forward largely unchanged. lineupthe toyota highlander is available in base or limited trim, each with front-wheel drive or full-time all-wheel drive. Be sure to order them. Head injuries are the primary cause of death in side impacts. The second-row seat is equipped with the latch system with top tether anchors for all three seating positions and lower anchors for outboard seating positions. A new low-tire-pressure warning system is standard. the star safety system, standard on all models, includes vehicle stability control (vsc) and traction control, anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and brake assist. walkaroundthe toyota highlander looks smart and trim, falling somewhere between the edgy high style of the rav4 and the muscular purposefulness of the 4runner. There's a slight family resemblance between the highlander and the lexus rx 330, although the highlander looks more dressed down, rather like wearing faded jeans and a favorite windbreaker instead of dry-clean-only lunch-with-the-ladies attire. highlander is slightly larger inside, as measured by total epa interior volume, than the rx 330, although the lexus has slightly more cargo volume. toyota design philosophy tends toward conservative appearance changes, and the highlander lacks a cutting-edge design such as that of the nissan murano. Highlander's front and rear overhangs are relatively large, tending more toward a station wagon look. It's an attractive vehicle, though, particularly in profile. Highlander's front bumper, light clusters and grille were revised for 2004. while the toyota 4runner is basically a truck, the highlander is essentially a car. Like a car, the highlander uses unibody construction rather than having a separate frame. Two-wheel-drive versions are front-wheel drive, not rear-wheel drive. The 4runner is the opposite of each of those strategies. For commuting and transporting the family, the highlander is the better, more comfortable choice. Properly equipped, highlander can tow up to 3,500 pounds, not much by truck standards, but sufficient for personal watercraft, small boats and other toys. interiorfew vehicles are easier to get in and out of than a toyota highlander. Neither climbing up nor stepping down is required. Highlander is even friendly to wearers of tight skirts. This makes the highlander one of the most convenient vehicles available for running daily errands. There are walk-in steps and a second-row sliding seat to help access the third row of seats. highlander comes with reclining bucket seats in front. These seats are flat and lean, but supportive and comfortable and adjust to suit various-size drivers. Their higher ride height provides a commanding view of the road. The sloping hood of the highlander makes the forward view even more encompassing. The front seats are designed to reduce the possibility of whiplash. the second row seats up to three passengers, but is better for two. The center of the second-row seat folds down into an arm rest with cup holders, and the seats recline for additional comfort. It's split 60/40 and folds down with a cleverly articulated seat bottom. The second row folds fairly flat but not perfectly flat. The second-row seat slides forward to make access to the third row easier, and to provide more legroom for third-row passengers. toyota intends for the third row to be used only occasionally. It's uncomfortable for average-sized adults. The third row is best for kids and short trips. Third-row seats are seldom comfortable, especially in this class. The nissan murano has no third row. Also, the side-curtain airbags do not protect third-row passengers; they do in a toyota sienna minivan. For transporting people, a minivan is better. Third-row seats are packaged with rear privacy glass, a rear heat. Redesigned for 2012. introductionthe 2012 toyota camry is the seventh generation, with redesigns coming every five years since 1982. Toyota claims that the new camry is not only the current bestselling midsize sedan, but also the safest, quietest, and most fuel-efficient. Five models of the 2012 camry range from the stripped-down l to the sport-tuned se to the hybrid. new for 2012, the camry hasn't changed its size, as the wheelbase, length, track and height are within fractions of an inch of those of the sixth-generation 2011 model. But the sheetmetal is totally new, and a new roofline makes it slightly more slippery. The 2012 camry's lines are attractive, and it's clearly more contemporary than the 2011. What toyota calls aero-corner design enhances this image. Interior dimensions stay the same within fractions of those of the previous version. There's a bit more backseat legroom, and some interior parts have been thinned to create more eye, knee and elbow room. The instrument panel is pretty and functional, storage spaces well thought-out, and a 60/40 split rear seat is standard. A new leather dashboard is neat and stylish. for powertrains, the standard i4 and optional v6 engines are carryovers from 2010 and 2011, respectively. Six-speed automatic transmissions are standard. The standard 2. 5-liter i4 has double vvt-i technology, making 178 horsepower. The 3. 5-liter v6 produces 268 horsepower. It reflects ongoing research in impact energy management. the tuned suspension in the camry se might be too firm for some; we didn't find the se uncomfortable, but we did find the softer camry xle more relaxing around town. We preferred the se's tighter steering in all circumstances. the camry hybrid uses a new 2. 5-liter atkinson cycle engine, with more horsepower and electric power than before. It feels like a totally different car than the i4 or v6, as it slows everything down and makes the vehicle feel bigger. The 2012 camry hybrid le is rated by the government at 43/39 mpg, camry hybrid xlt at 40/38 mpg. lineupthe 2012 toyota camry comes in five models. Camry l 21,955) uses the 2. 5-liter i4 and is hard to find. More likely is a well-equipped camry le 22,500), which comes standard with power doors and windows, cruise control, 60/40 rear folding seats, overhead console, display with 6. 1-inch screen, am/fm/cd/mp3/usb with ipod, bluetooth hands-free phone capability, projector beam headlamps, manual front seat adjustment, and 16-inch steel wheels with wheelcovers. camry xle 24,725) adds a power moonroof, foglamps, heated outside mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, power front seats, back-up camera, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Camry xle v6 29,845) upgrades to the 3. 5-liter v6 engine. the sporty camry se 23,000) and se v6 26,640) has a thoroughly tuned suspension, sport mesh body-colored front grille, halogen headlamps, rocker panels and rear spoiler, softex-trimmed sport seats, paddle shifters, and 18-inch alloy wheels on the v6, 17-inch on the i4. safety equipment standard on all models includes 10 airbags, electronic stability control with traction control, abs with brake assist and brake force distribution, and a tire pressure monitoring system. walkaroundthe redesigned 2012 camry hasn't changed its size, as the wheelbase, length, track and height are the same within fractions of an inch. But the sheetmetal is 100 percent new, and a new roofline makes it slightly more slippery, at 0. 27 cd vs. It's quite attractive for a vanilla car, with clean sides and nice edges, with no lumpy cladding or gratuitous chrome. Indeed it has lost weight, 150 pounds (220 pounds for the hybrid). It might all be under the skin, but no matter, it's all good. What toyota calls aero-corner design enhances this image. Hips and shoulders tucked in. the camry le uses wheelcovers over 16-inch steel wheels, the camry xle uses 17-inch alloy wheels, and the camry se uses 17- or 18-inchers. All three styles successfully avoid cookie cutting, with the le's 20-spoke titanium-tinted wheelcovers ironically being the most ambitious and eye-catching, if not the classiest. the new roofline angles the windshield more steeply. There's a nice character line under the windows slanting slightly up to the rear deck, where there's a small spoiler lip on the se. Windows outlined in chrome, but no more, except for a thin strip at the rocker level on the le and xle. Body-colored door handles on all models. the face of the camry se is tweaked, for the better, with body color over the black mesh grille, and more aggressive air intakes in the valance under the bumper. Headlamps are the same, angled, narrow and sleek, with a neat little notch in the line at the bottom. interiorinterior dimensions for the seventh-generation 2012 camry are within fractions of an inch of the sixth-generation (2007-11) models. There's a bit more backseat legroom, with 38. 9 inches on a flat rear floor decent for a midsize car. Some interior parts have been thinned to create more eye, knee and elbow room: a-pillars, control panels on the doors, front seatbacks, center console. interior materials are different depending on the model, with the camry l, le and xle using a nice standard fabric, and the camry se fabric with softex synthetic leather trim. Real leather is available on the camry xle i4 and standard on the xle v6, with leather-trimmed ultrasuede available on the se and xle hybrid. the fit of the front buckets is good on the camry le and xle, with more bolstering on the se. The camry hybrid has its own material, more like the se. The standard leather is overlapped in an arc with neat stitching, for a saddle-like effect; new passengers will compliment it and maybe run their hands over the seam. The little window for the clock up at the top looks like a hood scoop. we found the driver's position comfortable, with thoughtful padding for the driver's right leg against the center console, and high armrests. Decent door pocket, great cubby forward in the center console, big glovebox with light door. the instrument panel is all new for 2012. We wonder what the stripper camry l model without the 3d face looks like. Instruments are the same, only difference is in the rings around the gauges, chrome or satin. the hybrid's panel is the same only prettier. In toyota-speak it has optitron meters with white illumination, blue metallic printing, and white lighting pointer. Another plus: relocation of the battery packs increase the trunk space in the camry hybrid to 13. 1 cubic feet (from the previous 10. 6). trunk space on all camry models except the hybrid is a roomy 15. 4 cubic feet. the manually operated climate control has big dials and easy buttons on the camry le. The automatic climate control on camry xle uses a 6. 1-inch lcd touch-screen also used for radio tuning, and navigation. Safely and simply they say, and we say don't believe it. It can all be bundled with navigation and satellite radio and voice recognition, and controlled on the 7-inch touch screen. That's because the camry se is tighter than the camry xle or le; and the 178-hp i4 is quick, silent and smooth, no matter that the 268-hp v6 is faster. Both the i4 and v6 are carried over, the i4 new in 2010 and v6 new for 2011. on the camry xle, using the lighter 6-speed for the i4, we noted good ratios, smooth upshifts and invisible kickdowns around town. New styling for class-leading pickup. introductionthe 2012 toyota tacoma arrives with a new look inside and out, new and more sophisticated audio choices, and the same basic mechanical underpinnings that have made it a favorite in its class for almost a decade. tacoma owns the compact pickup market. Toyota sold more than 106,000 tacomas in 2010, which is nearly twice as many trucks as the tacoma's nearest competitor. the tacoma was named 'most dependable midsize pickup' in the j. But every 2012 tacoma will greet the world with a new grille, engine hood, front fenders, and front bumper. The new look is at once both fresh and familiar. Its on-road handing is responsive; its off-road capability is proven. The double cab delivers more rear-seat comfort than most of the competition, with enough room to rival a small sedan. The base model is among the few regular-cab pickups still available, as the market has moved to extended-cab and crew cab styles; it excels at durability and reliability. For one thing, they have not been compact for many years, they're midsize. Nor are they uncomfortable. They're more comfortable and more capable than ever before. lineupthe 2012 toyota tacoma is available in 20 different configurations, including regular cab, access cab (extended cab) and double cab (crew cab) body styles. Regular and access cabs come with six-foot beds; double cab comes with the choice of a shorter five-foot bed or a standard-size six-footer. Access cabs have power windows and locks; double cabs add power mirrors. Access and double cabs also get satellite-ready six-speaker audio systems. X-runner is offered only in the access cab style, and only with the v6 and 6-speed manual. sr5 packages bundle styling and comfort features, including color-keyed overfenders and front bumper, chrome grille surround and chrome rear bumper, bucket seats with lumbar support, and a long list of car-like conveniences. These packages can be added to any access cab or double cab with automatic transmission. the trd sport package starts with sr5 equipment and adds or substitutes p265/65r17 tires, sport-tuned suspension with bilstein shock absorbers, sport seats, overhead console and with compass and outside temperature, plus a hood scoop, lots of body-color trim, and its own graphics package. New for 2012 are turn signals integrated into the outside mirrors. Eighteen-inch chrome-clad alloy wheels are optional. The trd sport package is available on v6-powered access cabs and double cabs with either manual or automatic transmission. the trd off-road package starts with the sr5 equipment and adds or substitutes bf goodrich p265/70r16 owl tires, locking rear differential, off-road suspension with bilstein shock absorbers, engine skidplate, sport seats, overhead console with compass and outside temperature, heavy-duty front tow hook, 115v/400w deck-mounted power point, and unique trd graphics. Trd off-road is also available only on v6 model access and double cabs, but not on double cab long beds. an optional tow package 650) for v6 models comprises a 130-amp alternator, heavy-duty battery, transmission oil cooler, and a class iv hitch with seven-pin connector. safety features that come on all models include anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, vehicle stability control with traction control, and the automatic limited-slip differential. Models with automatic transmission also include hill-start assist control, and trd off-road models add downhill assist control. In addition, front airbags, front seat side-impact airbags, and side-curtain airbags are standard on all models. walkaroundthe 2012 tacoma is all-new from the a-pillar forward: new engine hood, new headlights, new fog light housings, new bumper fascias, and new front grilles on all grades. A slightly protruding inner grille of black plastic now echoes and emphasizes this toy-truck hallmark. The trapezoidal shape leaves a gap between grille and headlights, and where the previous tacoma filled this space with little side grilles, for 2102 reshaped headlight housings extend inward to cover the same area. the lower air opening, previously just slit in body-colored fascia, is now more prominent as well; gripped between a body-color arch at the top (again, the arch theme) and a grey pseudo-skidplate below; it now suggests the menacing mouth of some bottom-feeding fish. Fog light nacelles, previous functional tunnels in the fascia, now wear their own elaborate, surrounding shape. In short, it's the familiar tacoma face, only more so. We think it looks tougher and more rugged without going over the top. overall length of the tacoma varies by body style: regular cabs are the shortest and most maneuverable, measuring 190. 4 inches overall on a 109. 6-inch wheelbase. Access cab and double cab short-bed models have a 127. 4-inch wheelbase and 208. 1-inch overall length. Double cab long-bed models are quite long at 221. 3 inches overall on a 140. 6-inch wheelbase. All models have six-foot beds except the double cab short-bed, which has a five-foot bed. how to choose? Regular cab models pack lots of cargo space in a relatively small package, good for maneuverability in the big city. Regular cab 4wd models also have the best break-over angle due to their short length, and therefore offer the best capability off road.
