It doesn't open separately. the wheelbase is long when compared to the total length, resulting in short front and rear overhangs (the part of the car that extends ahead of or behind the wheels). That helps maximize interior space. the five-spoke alloy wheels are simple, silver, and individual, with each of the five spokes having a stylish twist. interiorthe kia rondo has a versatile interior. Counting all the ways the three rows divide, recline and fold, kia cites some 32 different seating configurations with the optional third-row seat. since roomy seating is what makes the rondo special, let's start with a tale of the tape: leg room in the front, middle and third rows is 41. 3, 38. 2 and 31. 3 inches, compared to 40. 7, 35. 2 and 30. 7 in the mazda5, and 41. 8, 38. 3 and 30. 0 in the rav4. But inches expressed as numbers on a page aren't necessarily conclusive. It's cozy back there, not the best place for adults. On each side of the third row, there's a good-sized storage bin with a flip-up top like a console, and one cupholder. The second-row seats recline, as well. for cargo carrying, both the second and third rows fold flat easily; the second-row seat cushion folds forward and the seatback flops down, with the headrest flipping back. Each side of each row folds separately, so a long space can be created on one side of the car, suitable for, say, a short kayak. With all the rear seats down, there's a lot of cargo space. With the third row in use, there's only room behind the seat for a couple of brief cases. The cloth looks better in gray than beige: less old-fashioned. The perforated gray leather seats added a real touch of class, along with $1000 to the price. The driver's seat is high and affords good visibility; from behind the wheel, the rondo feels like neither an suv nor a car, which is what a crossover is about. The climate ducts are round and balanced, and the knobs are easy to understand and operate. The leather-wrapped steering wheel on the ex feels great, and there are steering wheel controls, as well. cubby storage includes a compartment on top of the dashboard, more convenient for the driver than the glovebox because it's easily reachable. For its part, the glovebox is a good size. The automatic shift lever is located up on the center stack, giving more room for the console between the seats, which is deep and square. The 2. 7-liter v6 produces 182 horsepower and comes with a five-speed automatic transmission with sportmatic. We played with the sportmatic and found it well-programmed. We ran the rondo up to 80 mph where it was quiet and smooth, feeling like no more than 70. We drove it like a sports car over twisty roads, and we could barely hear the engine when the transmission downshifted for acceleration; it was a bit slow to kick down into second gear, but was fine at higher speeds. The manual upshifts at 5800 rpm were sharp. both models use the same suspension, although the shocks are tuned a bit firmer with the v6 because of the extra weight. This explains kia's accelerated development cycle on its forte model. This new fifth generation, 2014 forte has come out just three-and-a-half years after the appearance of its predecessor. When that car emerged, the marketplace was not as thronged with comprehensively equipped, stylish offerings as it is now, so the new forte's timing could not be better. The turbocharged 1. 6-liter engine is exclusively available on the forte sx 5-door. forte 5-door also features a sport-tuned suspension. many of the essential items like abs, air conditioning, bluetooth, satellite radio and kia's comprehensive safety equipment are standard on all models. The technology package adds hid headlights, led tail lights, a 4. 2-inch color lcd cluster screen and dual-zone automatic temperature control with rear seat ventilation. walkaroundthe new 2014 kia forte has a crisply chiseled shape sitting on a wheelbase some two inches longer than the previous car. Kia describes the front end as having a winged bumper shape between the distinctive kia grille and the underbumper intake, which shares the grille's mesh pattern. Headlamp enclosures are flared into the bodywork like streamliner canopies, and they showcase projector low-beam lamps on all models. the windshield and a-pillars are set at a sporty rake, calling for small front quarterlites that match, in turn, rear versions necessitated by the car's fast roofline. Body color is used on doorhandles and mirrors, while a chrome beltline garnish emphasizes the glasshouse's wedge profile, lending the forte's profile a strong cab-forward visual sense. an extreme rear window rake and generous deck height provide a distinctly european flavor to the rear aspect of the sedan. Any chunkiness is relieved by the asymmetrical tail-light shapes and underbumper diffuser, and the lights themselves have 81 leds for a conspicuous night-time presence. The trunk opening is two inches wider for easier use. while one might see the design as euro-derived, it is nonetheless attractive, tidy and balanced. We have yet to see the 15-inch wheels on the forte, but the aggressively patterned 16-inch alloys fill their apertures in a pleasing fashion. less obvious are the underbody tweaks that company officials say have helped the forte achieve a slippery drag coefficient of 0. 27. as on the sedan, the forte 5-door's swept headlights stretch deep into the front fenders and the raked windshield and broad shoulders give the front end a sleek, sporty appearance. Led positioning lights add a premium look to the front fascia. Large 18-inch wheels fill the wheel wells on the sx, and the hatchback profile affords a performance-oriented european personality. Around back, the rear hatch glass opens to reveal 23. 2 cubic feet of usable cargo space. Led tail lights complete the premium feel of the exterior and a sporty rear valance with twin chrome exhaust tips maintains the forte 5-door's edgy demeanor. interiorinterior ambiance is one of the big challenges facing compact cars. Consumers can easily adapt to smaller exterior dimensions, but they will notice cheesy interior details for the life of the car. Angled 10-degrees toward the driver for a more-intimate interface, the center console is clean and uncluttered. the instruments themselves are large and bright, and the various control buttons have a pleasing sense to their operation. Much of the molded surface is coated in a nano paint treatment which is slightly rubbery to the touch, mitigating the usual criticisms about hard moldings. considerable detail abounds in the door panels, where distinct concavities house the armrests and window controls. Torsional rigidity is up by 37 percent, according to kia. Careful control of noise and vibration has produced a car with refinement that seems well above its spot on the pricelist. Shift-shock is all but absent in the forte, and it's difficult even to confuse the transmission with sudden throttle movements. There's a manual override shift system in the new forte, and it surprised us by holding the gear selected even when the throttle was quickly floored. It is a competent, comfortable, roomy and well-equipped compact sedan. If it has been tuned to a sweet spot in the marketplace that prefers a composed and convenient car rather than a taut, close-focused attack tool, more power to kia. Those gear changes are clean, if not remarkably sharp, with ready downshifts for overtaking or merging. the steering feels heavier in the awd version but is reasonably responsive in both, with good directional stability. All-wheel drive comes with a limited locking feature for low-speed use in adverse conditions. the 2013 kia sportage is changed only slightly from last year. 2013 sportage models can be distinguished by revised kia badges. Power folding mirrors and sun visor extenders come on all 2013 sportage models. Led accent lights come on 2013 sportage lx and 2013 sportage ex models; the 2013 sportage sx gets led daytime running lights. The 2013 sportage ex is available with a new blue interior package. Sportage was redesigned for the 2011 model year. Some interior features were added for 2012. the styling looks fresh and sharp from every angle. Character lines are crisp but subdued, contrasting nicely with the overall rounded look.
