Payload capacities and towing capability have been improved. Towing is greatly enhanced by a new integrated electric brake control. Not only is it elegantly designed right into the instrument panel, but it operates much better than aftermarket controllers, making it easier to modulate the brakes for smooth, accurate stops. fresh styling gives the 2005 ford super duty pickups a more masculine, big-rig appearance. Inspired by ford's tonka truck concept, the new super duty trucks look like they're ready to get some serious work done. Payload capacities of up to 5800 pounds are available in the 2005 super duty trucks, with tow ratings of up to 17,000 pounds. The ford f-250 super duty competes with the dodge ram 2500, chevrolet silverado 2500, and gmc sierra 2500. The f-350, with its available dual rear wheels, competes against the 3500-series models from gm and dodge. None of these, however, match the super duty's top payload and towing capacities. the 2005 super duty pickups continue to feature first-class powertrains. Both of the v8 gas engines are upgraded for 2005. The standard 5. 4-liter v8 is now based on ford's modular v8 architecture and incorporates three valves per cylinder for better breathing, improved power delivery and cleaner exhaust. The 6. 8-liter v10 also gets the modular-based, three-valve cylinder heads, giving it class-leading horsepower and torque. The v10 and 6. 0-liter turbo-diesel now have electronic throttle control, expanding their utility in accessory applications. styling revisions for 2005 include a bolder, almost brutish front end and broader flanks. The frame is stronger, now boasting a fully boxed front section and thicker walls in high-stress areas. A reconfigured rear suspension improves the ride and load balance, and a new front suspension sharpens steering response and significantly tightens the turning circle. the new super duty interiors feature increased use of higher grade materials, better assembly quality and more people-oriented amenities make for surprisingly comfortable accommodations, especially in the up-level trims. We love the king ranch edition, swathed in rich cow hides that looks like they came right out of the tack room. lineupford super duty is offered in more configurations than we can count. All can pull heavy loads and are more truck than most consumers will ever need. Wheelbase lengths vary by body style: 137 inches for a regular cab, 142 inches for a supercab short-bed, 158 inches for a supercab long-bed, 156 inches for a crew cab short-bed, and 172 inches for crew cab long-bed. all f-250 models come with single rear wheels. F-350 models are available with single rear wheels (srw) or dual rear wheels (drw). The latter, often called 'dualies,' are great for towing as they offer higher tongue-weight ratings, although they do give up an almost meaningless 300 pounds to the srw models in fifth wheel/goose neck maximum towing capacity. the base engine across the line is the new, 24-valve, 5. 4-liter v8. Xlt models are equipped more like the average passenger car, with air conditioning and more stereo choices. Lariats come with automatic air conditioning, an overhead console, leather seats with six-way power, and aluminum wheels. Power telescoping trailer mirrors are available on xlt 220) and standard on lariat and king ranch; they feature heated glass and integral turn signal repeaters. Manually telescoping mirrors are available 125) on xl. A power sliding rear cab window is available on the lariat 185). A sport package 1,085) for xlt supercabs and crew cabs adds chromed tubular step bars; body-color grille, bumpers, and door handles; sliding rear cab window; fog lamps; privacy glass; an exclusive two-tone cloth 40/20/40 split-bench front seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Other options include a moonroof 995), adjustable pedals 120), cruise control/tilt steering column 385), roof marker lights 55), and running boards. the towcommand package on the xl 330) includes the manually telescoping mirrors. On the xlt and lariat, towcommand adds the integrated trailer brake controller and heat to the telescoping mirrors 425). The integrated trailer brake controller is also available as a stand-alone across the line 205), as are upfitter switches 60). Also, towcommand requires the automatic transmission. the fx4 off-road package 225) adds skid plates and rancho shock absorbers; the steering damper. walkaroundford bestowed on the 2004 f-150 much of the brawny, no-nonsense look we liked about the previous generation of the company's f-250 and f-350 pickups. This meant the 2005 super duty line had to have its own spruced up, new look. The lower front fascia is beefier, too, adding to the impression of mass in motion. otherwise, the styling of the 2005 models doesn't differ much from the 2004s. The cab's dropped sill line gives it a sense of openness and accessibility. It also makes climbing in easier, a welcome feature when juggling tools, briefcases, or even toddlers. A distinctive dip along the front door side glass improves the driver's view of the exterior mirrors, a big help when towing a trailer or for seeing around cargo boxes or dump-truck bodies. A locking tailgate is standard. king ranch crew cabs are dressed up with body-color mirror housings and door handles and distinctive two-tone paint selections, lighted running boards and special king ranch aluminum wheels. The harley-davidson specials sport a unique, tautly meshed grille; color choices consist of black, black and orange, and black and gray; factory-applied flame graphics are a new option 675). the tow hitch receiver has been increased from 2 inches to 2 1/2 inches for increased towing capacity. interiorford super duty trucks are very roomy, with comfortable, spacious seats and plenty of hip and shoulder room. truck owners spend a lot of time in their vehicles, so ford's interior designers paid a lot of attention to comfort and convenience. The standard interior features a fold-down armrest, a floor console that can accommodate a laptop, and a removable hanging storage bin that can attach to the dash. Even the standard bench seats recline. Two large cupholders are provided. The standard cigar lighter is augmented with a second auxiliary power outlet conveniently mounted up in the dash to the right of the climate control switches. controls are big and easy to reach and manipulate. The instrument array is new, with large, round speedometer and tachometer, bracketed by oil pressure and fuel level gauges to the left and transmission temperature (on trucks with automatics) and coolant temperature gauges to the right. Optional power-adjustable pedals 120) are helpful for short-stature drivers (many women, for example), allowing them to sit a safer distance from the airbag in the steering wheel. switches for the optional trailer brake controller and towcommand are integrated into the lower dash beneath the drive-selector knob and stereo control panel, much nicer than attaching a controller with velcro or duct tape. More power, better brakes, sharper handling and a new look. introductionthe mustang -- the original pony car -- is all-new for 1999 with improvements to every single system under its brand-new skin. the mustang has only two true competitors, the chevrolet camaro and the pontiac firebird. Like the two gm pony cars, the ford mustang comes in many guises. There are v6 and v8 versions in both coupe and convertible body styles along with the cobra, the super-performance model that competes against the camaro ss and the firebird ram air. There are japanese and korean coupes that compete with mustang on price, but they don't offer pony car performance. walkaroundnew mustang styling features chiseled lines for a much more muscular appearance. The design was influenced by both the original 1964 mustang and the recent gt90 concept car. The rear fender air intake is twice as long, fitted with sharp corners and much more pronounced lines. The rocker panels curve out, and the fenders have pronounced front and rear wheel well arches. This gives the car a racier stance than the previous model. the front end features new wraparound complex reflector headlamps with integrated side marker lamps, and a new, larger grille opening with a honeycomb grille texture and a chrome pony emblem reminiscent of the original 1964 emblem. The hood contains a prominent hood scoop, which is not functional. 1999 marks the 35th anniversary of the mustang, and all models celebrate this with a front fender tri-bar mustang badge. the roof has been changed to a new design with a sharp edge. The rear quarter windows have a new shape, the rear fenders have sharp corners on them, and the three-element tail lamps have sharp corners. The decklid is made of smc plastic in order to accommodate those sharp corners. All three wheel designs, 15-, 16- and 17-inch are new, with flat spoke designs to complement the sharp corners of the new body shell. The selection of goodyear, firestone and bfg tires remains the same as last year. All gt models get twin, three-inch diameter polished stainless steel exhaust tips. The gt gets a rear deck spoiler and front fog lamps as standard equipment. the mustang's electrical system has been simplified with the addition of a single module that replaces the functions of a half-dozen single-function modules for wipers, chimes, illuminated entry system, one-touch-down windows, remote entry and the anti-theft system. interiorinside the car, there is no change in overall appearance. The seat foam has been improved, seat tracks have been redesigned to add one inch of additional rearward travel to better accommodate taller drivers, and seat belts have been attached to the seats to move with them. Embossed ponies on the upper portions of the seat backrests give the interior a sporty, traditional mustang look. Medium graphite, medium parchment and midnight black are the new interior colors. The instrument panel, the center console and the headliner will be color keyed in 1999 models, instead of the former black-only. audio systems have been upgraded for the second straight year. The 80-watt premium sound system that comes standard on all models is combined with new, better-sounding speakers. An optional cd/radio combination, a cd/cassette system, and the mach 460 system will continue for 1999. the interior is nice and cozy in the coupe. Now there's enough seat track length to accommodate tall drivers and just enough elbow room to keep from feeling cramped. The mustang's back seat is vestigial at best, with only enough room for small objects or very small people. The split fold-down rear seat is handy for hauling large cargo, however. driving impressionacceleration performance is improved for 1999. Power from the mustang gt's v8 engine is up 35 horsepower (and 10 foot-pounds of torque) over last year. The gt's revised 4. 6-liter sohc modular v8 engine produces 260 horsepower at 5000 rpm, with 302 foot-pounds of torque at 4000 rpm. The engine features new camshafts, new intake manifold runners, and larger valves, for improved air flow above 3000 rpm. A new coil-on-plug ignition system replaces the previous distributorless system for higher energy spark. power from the standard 3. 8-liter split-port v6 engine is up substantially as well, rising from 150 horsepower to 190 horsepower at 5250 rpm with 225 foot-pounds of torque at 3000 rpm. the drivetrain has been improved with a recalibrated 4-speed automatic transmission for smoother upshifts. All models, regardless of engine or transmission, get a 3. 27 :1 rear axle ratio. Both gearboxes shift smoothly and mate well to an engine that features a flexible powerband and sufficient strength to take high-rpm shifts for the life of the car. traction control is a new option for 1999. The bosch system works at all speeds to reduce wheelspin. Whenever wheelspin is detected, the system retards ignition timing, cuts fuel flow, and activates the brakes at one or both drive wheels, in that order. The driver can turn the system off with a console switch. most of the raw edges and choppiness of the mustang's old suspension behavior have been smoothed out. Engineers retuned the rear suspension for improved compliance by increasing suspension travel. This reduces ride harshness. The gt now has linear-rate springs, up in front to 450 pounds per inch. At the rear, the old springs were swapped out in favor of 210 pound per inch linear-rate springs. These decrease the mustang's well known ride stiffness and improve steering feel and response. the steering is more direct and more positive than previous mustangs. A revised boost curve gives the steering more linear response and better on-center feel. The turning circle has been reduced by three feet through changes to the steering rack, the lower control arms and front stabilizer bars. the braking system got a thorough going-over, which it needed badly, with new aluminum twin-piston front calipers that not only whack 10 pounds off the front of the car, but also result in much improved pedal feel. Abs is still optional for 1999 and must be ordered to get the traction control system. summarythe camaro and firebird are slightly more powerful than the mustang gt (by 45-70 horsepower). The mustang gt is also less expensive than either of the gm pony cars by several thousand dollars.
